Small Claims Changes Petition [3rd Jun 2012]
A Facebook group has been set up to make people more aware of a change to the small claims court system which will result in fewer cases being able to be made using the small claims court. Members of the public are being encouraged to sign a petition to express to the government the feeling behind the changes. The government has proposed that the limit on small claims cases should be increased from £1,000 to £5,000, meaning that anyone who has a small claim against another party will need to pay for their own solicitor to fight for compensation. It is thought that the new rules would lead to huge savings for insurance companies who usually payout in compensation cases. In addition it is feared that those people who are employed in the personal injury sector may be at risk of losing their jobs if the number of smaller cases drops dramatically. The proposals to raise the limit are part of a government crackdown on spurious compensation claims and they expect that insurance companies will pass the savings they make back to their customers. They want to encourage insurance companies to fight cases rather than settling out of court. In the UK, if more than 10,000 signatures are are added to a petition, the issue has to be discussed by parliament.
