£200million Compensation Package for Equal Pay Dispute [21st Jun 2012]
Thousands of women council workers could be sharing a £200 million compensation payment after it was found that their employers did not comply with the Equal Pay act. South Lanarkshire Council employed 2400 female employees over the period as cleaners, carers and catering staff. It is claimed that Unison bosses colluded with the council to ensure that male workers received extra bonuses while women on the same pay grade did not receive them. Carol Fox, the lawyer working on behalf of the women has said that it has taken six years of litigation to get to this point and the council have continued to deny that female workers deserved equal pay. The council have said that they will be looking at the judgement before they decide on the next course of action. Because the attacks took place outside of war zones, they are being described as extra-judicial killings and are even thought of as war crimes by some. David Anderson from the Home Office has said that claims have also been made suggesting that MI6 helped to arrange the handing over of suspects to the Gaddafi regime. He points out that these types of cases are large in number and are likely to come in a second wave regarding the use of drones. There have been hundreds of attacks using drones in Pakistan and the Yemen, with seven UK citizens being killed. The UK government has not said if UK security have provided information regarding these attacks. More than 600 adults were questioned in the survey and 78% said they had been contacted by a claims management firm. 92% of those people contacted said that the offer of making a claim was not relevant to them. James Dalton from the ABI has commented that these type of unsolicited calls and texts are just a symptom of the dysfunctional compensation system in the UK. He says that it encourages erroneous claims and those who have to pay more for their insurance premiums are the real losers. He says that the survey shows that the public support changes to the compensation system so that genuine claimants can get the money they deserve. The Hague ruling has yet to be revealed to the media, but Samsung have said that they will be recovering compensation from Apple to cover the damage caused. It is thought that this could run into millions. They have stated that Apple have made free use of their technologies and that they will continue to defend their innovations from other manufacturers. The lawsuit stemmed from the infringement of four patents which were used in Apple products including the iPad and the iPhone. Samsung have registered their patents under a fair use policy which means that they can be used under a fair license. This will mean that the products will not be banned. Two of the patent arguments were not held up in court and Samsung will need to pay the court costs for these.
