Holiday Company Pays Out on Sickness Claim [24th May 2012]
A man from Cleethropes has said he will never travel again after he feared for his life during a recent holiday. Colin Binns has received more than £1,000 in compensation after he ended up with severe food poisoning which left him in quarantine for two days. Mr Binns who is a carer for his disabled wife, took an all-inclusive holiday in 2008 which was designed to be a respite from his caring duties. However the resort in Turkey was described by Mr Binns as being "vile" and he soon came down with a sickness bug which led to his hospital stay. Thomas Cook who arranged the holiday have offered the compensation for pain and suffering and they say they take any reports of health and hygiene issues very seriously. While this figure makes up just 4% of the overall number of complaints about PPI, the figure is still causing some concern. It is thought that claims companies are driving this increase in bogus compensation requests and that they are taking advantage of the huge payouts being made by banks. In the last year, 69% of all PPI complaints which went to the ombudsman were originally started by claims companies and in some cases the complaint regarded claimants who never had a PPI policy at all. These types of groundless claims have led the ombudsman to question if consumers are being led astray by claims companies. Claims companies often approach customers via text message or email and then claim up to 25% of the total amount of compensation as their fee. In some cases customers are paying upfront even though they never had a PPI policy. The ombudsman has stated that bogus claims are also slowing down the processing time of legitimate claims. The court has said that the UK ban on voting is against human rights. Experts are claiming that failure to make the necessary changes could lead to a rise in compensation cases of around £150 million. The Prime Minister has told MPs that their vote on whether to make the changes which resulted in an overwhelming support of the current system was the opinion he shared. He believes that parliament should be able to make the decision and not the European court. The ban on the right to vote for those in prison has been in place for 140 years and the government has no appetite to make changes. However it is thought that a compromise could be put in place which will allow those on short sentences to have the vote. Homeserve is one of the UK's largest home maintenance companies and offers an insurance policy which covers homeowners for maintenance related issues such as boiler breakdowns. The company provides cover to more than three million customers and it could be facing a large fine if evidence of mis-selling is found. The FSA has said that it will be completing an investigation after an internal probe found that there were some irregularities. Homeserve first discovered there were problems last year and altered sales scripts to ensure there was no misleading information given, however the FSA will need to do their own investigation. It is thought that customers who were ms-sold could receive compensation payments. Related Stories: Homeserve faces FSA probe over mis-sold policies. - www.dailymail.co.uk |
